The best way to store a waterproofed tent is to roll it up when it is completely dry and store it in a dry, cool and dark place, preferably in a breathable bag or box. How long should a tent be left to dry before you put it away?<\/h2>\n

An impregnated tent must be left to dry completely for at least 24 to 48 hours before you put it away. In damp or cold weather, this can take up to 72 hours. Storing the tent whilst the fabric is still damp is the quickest way to encourage mould growth and damage the waterproof coating.<\/p>\n

After applying a waterproofing agent to your fabric, the protective layer penetrates deep into the fibres of the canvas, polyester or nylon. Those fibres need time to dry completely and allow the waterproofing to set. Can you still feel any coolness or dampness when you touch it? If so, the tent isn\u2019t ready to be packed away yet.<\/p>\n

Ideally, hang the tent outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Avoid direct sunlight whilst it is drying, as intense UV radiation can damage the freshly applied waterproofing coating before it has fully cured. A shaded spot with a light breeze is ideal. Also check the seams and corners particularly carefully, as these dry more slowly than the flat surface of the fabric.<\/p>\n

The best way to roll up a waterproofed tent is loosely and without any sharp creases. Roll up the fabric in a gentle, even motion, avoiding sharp creases or wrinkles. Tight creases in the same place can cause the waterproof coating to crack or flake over time.<\/p>\n

When packing the tent away again, alternate the direction in which you roll it up compared to previous seasons. This will prevent the same areas from being subjected to repeated strain. Some campers do not roll up their tent but fold it loosely into a spacious bag, which further reduces the pressure on the waterproof coating.<\/p>\n

It is best to use a breathable storage bag rather than an airtight plastic bag. Breathable material prevents any residual moisture from being trapped, which can lead to mould growth. A cotton bag or a specialised tent bag with ventilation is best suited for this purpose.<\/p>\n
